The House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria Speaker, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila received the Directors Guild of Nigeria today in his office. The Speaker expressed satisfaction with the efforts of the DGN in presenting Nigeria to the world in the last 20 years. ”The Directors Guild of Nigeria is critical to the social development of the country” and ”it's in the best interest for the House to partner with DGN in terms of legislation in order to create a conducive environment for movie practitioners to thrive.” The Speaker said. He added that the House will look into the issue of piracy. The Speaker commended the industry for creating employment and charged the guild to tap into the potential of Nigeria’s 200 million people with rich culture and help grow a diversified income portfolio for the country. Speaker also charged Directors Guild of Nigeria to meet with the relevant committees like committee on culture and tourism in order to draw up legislation that will create a more enabling environment for the film industry. Mr. Fred Amata, the President of the Directors Guild of Nigeria who led the delegation of creatives from the film sector to the Office of the Speaker said the industry has identified the Speaker as a Creative Patron who is receptive to the guild. The President of the Guild said the courtesy visit was to formally invite the Speaker to the Guilds 20th-anniversary celebration.
